Risk of Electrical fire
All electrical equipment brought into the school is in good working order and regularly PAT tested.
Boiling water for hot drinks.
Children are not allowed in the kitchen unsupervised.
Drinks prepared in the kitchen. Staff responsible for their own drinks at briefing and debriefing.
Hot drinks are not consumed while children are on the premises, other than children of helpers.
Risk or allergic reaction from food
Group leaders have all medical information supplied by parents about children’s allergies.
Fire risk to those using the building
The building is fitted with an automatic Fire Alarm system as well as manually activated fire alarm points.
If the alarm is raised then Group leaders take groups to the designated assembly points on the school field.
Exits explained at Saturday Briefing
Electrical Damage to audio visual system leading to injury
Audio Visual system must be used by a competent adult, who has received suitable instruction about the system.
Cleaning material. Ingestion or spills on skin.
All cleaning liquids in the cleaning cupboard (near main entrance). Cleaning Cupboard always locked - with key hanging at top of door frame to keep out of reach of children.
Trips on trailing wires
All trailing electrical wires are suspended above head height or underneath tables/staging or along the edge of rooms or underneath carpets.
Trips & Falls inside building
Children are monitored in corridors and travel in a line.
When exiting the main hall children leave in stages to reduce risk of crowding in corridors.
Classrooms/dens are kept clean and free from obstructions between tables.
There are handrails up the stairs to the rooms on the first floor.
Spills of liquid are mopped up immediately.
Door mats kept flat and securely in place.
Children leaving unattended during the session
A register is taken as the children arrive and the children in each group are counted each time the group changes location.
When signing up carers are asked if their child has additional needs including an increased risk of them running away or hiding. This allows groups to be resourced with sufficient helpers to give support.
If a child runs away, a helper from their group (or another nearby helper) will notify the group leader and follow and retrieve the child while the main group remains attended by the group leader.
Children leaving with the wrong adult
Parents/carers are asked about special pick up arrangements which group leaders then follow. In the absence of such arrangements children will be allowed to leave with adults that they recognise.
Working at height
When the tall ladder is used in the hall there must be someone at the bottom of the ladder to hold it.
Only able-bodied individuals who are comfortable doing so should climb the ladder.
Where possible, individuals should avoid working at height (e.g. standing on a chair to put up decorations) when alone. Where unavoidable, they should check another helper is within earshot and let them know that they will be working from height and will call for help if needed.
Misuse of craft equipment leading to injury
Instructions will be provided to children for each craft. Any risk areas (e.g. poking a hole in card using a cocktail stick) will be highlighted and children will be asked to take particular care at this point of the craft.
The helpers in the classrooms will monitor the use of craft equipment and materials and provide guidance or support where needed.
Risk of unknown people on site
All helpers wear yellow shirt uniform and will question any adult on premise not in uniform during the opening times of the holiday club.
