‘But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
‘I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who hum ble themselves will be exalted.’ LUKE 18:13-14
‘Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ (Repeat this slowly, several times, matching it to your breathing.)
One way that Christians have sought to follow the injunction to pray without ceasing is the ‘breath prayer’. The most famous of these is the one above, known as the Jesus Prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to inspire you in choosing a short breath prayer and repeat it often throughout the day. Over time you will find yourself praying it unconsciously.
