  • Heavenly father
give us grace today to find hope, particularly in the face of suffering and evil

22 While they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them,
“The Son of Man is about to be delivered up into the hands of men,
23 and they will kill him, and the third day he will be raised up.
    They were exceedingly sorry.

24 When they had come to Capernaum,
those who collected the didrachma coins came to Peter,  [Temple Tax of 2 drachma]]
and said, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the didrachma?”
    25 He said, “Yes.”
When he came into the house,
Jesus anticipated him, saying, “What do you think, Simon?
From whom do the kings of the earth receive toll or tribute? [It is not like income tax which is paid for by those who will benefit from public...

give us grace today to repent of our pride and become as little children

In that hour the disciples came to Jesus, saying,
“Who then is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?”
Jesus called a little child to himself, and set him in the middle of them
and said, “Most certainly I tell you, unless you turn and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little...

  • 1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ 2 He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. 3 And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. https://www.thefuelcast.com/library/2024-11-15-children-r3...
  • The thrust of Jesus’ message is about inclusion—shocking, scandalous inclusion: the kingdom of God is available to all, beginning with the least. Yet Jesus often warns people of the possibility of missing the kingdom. “Unless you become like a little child,” he said, “you shall not enter the kingdom” (see Matthew 18:3). So the possibility is real: the kingdom of God that is available to all can be missed by some.

What we need is a requirement that those who wish to enter actually have a change of heart—that they don’t sneak in to accomplish their own agenda,...

  • And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:3)

The nostalgia for what has been lost remains long after childhood can impel seekers to search both within themselves and out in the world for this lost place, time and state of mind. For Thomas Merton it is the nostalgia for, or intuition of, paradise, and is a longing for a return or restoration to an original state of being which is Eden. For him it is about a reversal of the fall and the separation from God. It is the journey forward to...

Learning to see beyond our biases is essential for the ongoing conversion of faith.

We need self-knowledge and the crucial need to recognize
    (1) when we are in denial about our own shadow and capacity for illusion;
    (2) our capacity to project our own fears and shadows onto other people and groups;
    (3) our capacity to face and carry our own...

  • Heavenly father
give us grace today to be open to receive from others, particularly those who do not have much to give

Whoever receives one such little child in my name receives me,
but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble,
it would be better for him if a huge millstone were hung around his neck and that he were sunk in the depths of the sea.

  • Heavenly father
give us grace today to turn away from despising those who don’t have much going for them.

“Woe to the world because of occasions of stumbling!
For it must be that the occasions come, but woe to that person through whom the occasion comes!
If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and cast it from you.
It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippled, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire.
    If your eye causes...
